Starting® Up® Your® Account® Securely
You've chosen Trezor for a reason: to take control of your digital assets with best-in-class security. This page—Trezor.io/Start—is your official gateway to initializing your hardware wallet and establishing your account environment for handling crypto safely.
Unlike ordinary online wallets, Trezor ensures your private keys never leave the physical device. Every step you take here will emphasize safety, transparency, and your sole control. Let’s begin.
Before diving into setup, make sure you have these items ready:
⚠️ Never record your recovery seed digitally or share it with anyone. This phrase is the only way to regain access to your funds if something happens to your device.
Open your browser and navigate to https://trezor.io/start. Confirm that the URL is exactly correct and that your browser shows a secure padlock. This ensures you’re accessing the genuine Trezor setup flow and not a phishing mimic.
On this page, you’ll be offered links to download Trezor Suite or to continue in a browser-based mode (if supported). Choose the option that suits you, though the desktop Suite often gives the smoother experience.
From the Start page, click the download button matching your operating system (Windows, macOS, Linux). Trezor Suite is the app that interfaces with your device, lets you manage accounts, view balances, and perform transactions.
Run the installer after download. If your OS prompts for permission, grant it. Once installed, launch Trezor Suite to continue the setup.
Plug in your Trezor using the USB cable. Trezor Suite will detect it automatically and begin the initialization sequence. If detection fails, try another USB port or cable (avoid USB hubs when possible).
The device may perform a hardware authenticity check, which confirms that it is a genuine Trezor unit. Always confirm these prompts directly on your device screen.
Many devices ship without firmware. If so, the Suite will prompt you to install it. If your firmware is already installed but an update is available, it will ask you to update. Approve on-device and wait patiently—do not disconnect during this process.
After the firmware installs, your device will reboot and verify its integrity. This helps prevent tampered hardware from being used.
At this point, you'll be presented with two options:
If creating new, your device will display the recovery phrase word by word. Write them down carefully in order. After writing, you’ll be asked to confirm randomly selected words to prove you recorded them correctly.
The next step is to set a PIN. This PIN protects your device from unauthorized use when plugged in. Always enter the PIN **on the Trezor device itself**, not your computer—this keeps malware from capturing it.
Choose something memorable yet firm; avoid easy sequences like “1234” or birth dates. Never store your PIN with your recovery seed.
Once your wallet is initialized, Trezor Suite will let you enable the coin accounts you want to view in your dashboard (Bitcoin, Ethereum, etc.). You can also apply advanced features:
After enabling everything you desire, finalize the setup. You’ll land on your main dashboard to view balances and start interacting with crypto.
With your account now active, here’s how to perform the fundamental tasks:
Trezor gives you powerful safety features—but security is a partnership. These habits help you use it safely:
Losing your Trezor device doesn’t mean losing your funds—provided you have your recovery phrase:
If all is done properly, your crypto will be restored exactly as before.
